
“Anyone who wants to own a gun must be evil,” said my new acquaintance.
I was at a dinner party making small talk. I don’t know how we meandered to the topic of gun violence but I couldn’t let her comment go unchallenged.
“But what if guns are a part of their culture?” I said.
“Yes, I can certainly understand that, but I’m talking about here, in the US, where guns aren’t needed.”
“So am I. I have close family and friends who have used guns their entire lives. I am all for legislation that limits gun access, but to say that people who want to own guns are evil seems to go a bit too far, don’t you think?”
I wish she had pushed back. I wish we could have had an honest and open dialogue about our opinions.
But she didn’t.
